Barry’s Movie Review: Game Night

There's a ton of movies out in theaters right now, with something for everybody's taste. I just checked out 'Game Night' yesterday and here's what you can expect if you're planning to see it.

Normally a Marvel movie would trump all others, but I feel they've just gone over the top with Marvel movies so my wife and I opted to skip 'Black Panther' and check out a comedy with 'Game Night'.

Bateman and McAdams star as Max and Annie, whose weekly couples game night gets kicked up a notch when Max’s charismatic brother, Brooks (Chandler), arranges a murder mystery party, complete with fake thugs and faux federal agents. So when Brooks gets kidnapped, it’s all part of the game…right? But as the six uber-competitive gamers set out to solve the case and win, they begin to discover that neither this “game”—nor Brooks—are what they seem to be. Over the course of one chaotic night, the friends find themselves increasingly in over their heads as each twist leads to another unexpected turn. With no rules, no points, and no idea who all the players are, this could turn out to be the most fun they’ve ever had…or game over.

Here's my review, without any spoilers:

As a big fan of comedies and also action/adventure movies, Game Night gives you a good mix of both. The star-studded lineup of characters in the movie is a perfect mix of personalities.

If you're a Netflix fan of "Bloodline" then you'll know the cadence of the John Rayburn character that Kyle Chandler plays. You will love the character that he plays in Game Night as "Brooks", who is the cocky older brother of Jason Bateman's character (Max). These two actors should do more movies together as they nailed it with who their characters portray.

Rachel McAdams is just adorable in the movie and obviously got to play a role that's much like her in real life -- fun, innocent, and bubbly. McAdams' character is "Annie" and she pairs very well as the wife of Max, with both of them being very competitive, especially when they host their weekly game night.

There's always a little twist in this movie that leads you in one direction, thinking you can forecast what's next...then quickly realizing you were way off. This is especially true when it comes time for Brooks to host the game night in his lavish home, promising a game night like they've never experienced before.

The supporting characters are exceptional, with every personality you can think of. The next door neighbor police officer is a big part of this movie, and is a genius addition of characters that you'll want to keep an eye on.

Not once did I feel the movie was never going to end, and laughed a lot. From beginning to end, this movie kept the attention of my wife and I. When it came time for me to refill my drink, I wished I could hit a pause button to not miss anything.

I'd give this movie a 4.5 stars out of 5, and guarantee when it comes out to rent, that I'll enjoy it again with some friends when we have our own movie and game night!
