When I was a young, angsty teenager, I fell in love with rock music. Some of the first bands I submerged myself in were Mastodon, CKY, and Dream Theater. It was heavy, aggressive material. But then something magical happened.

A friend of mine bought me the Foo Fighters’ Greatest Hits CD, and I instantly fell in love with it, which surprised me. Sure, they have some somewhat heavy tunes, but they’re primarily known for their happy, upbeat rock anthems.

They were the first band I liked that wasn’t all doom and gloom. “Everlong” “My Hero” and “Best Of You” showed me that it was okay to like fun, uplifting music. That CD made me feel emotions I had never felt before. And that’s part of why Dave Grohl is the reigning king of rock-n-roll.That, and the fact that the man is ALWAYS working.

You wouldn't be able to tell by his youthful looks and playful personality, but Mr. Grohl is 50 years old today. He sure has accomplished a lot in that time, between playing in countless successful bands and producing several documentaries and even a series on HBO. Where does the time go? It seems like just yesterday he was the skinny kid playing drums in Nirvana. Here's to another 50 years of music from Dave.
