New Steve Miller ‘Ultimate Hits’ Set to Include Previously Unreleased Recordings

There’s a new two-CD Steve Miller Band collection on the way that spans his entire career and also includes eight previously unreleased recordings.

Ultimate Hits, which comes out on Sept. 15, features 40 songs from Miller’s long career, starting with a recording of 5-year-old Miller talking to his godfather, electric guitar pioneer Les Paul. The two discs then wind through some of Miller’s best and most popular tracks — including his first No. 1, “The Joker”; “Fly Like an Eagle”; and “Abracadabra,” another No. 1 single — while making room for some never-heard cuts.

Among those new recordings are live versions of favorites like “Living in the USA,” demos (including an early version of “Take the Money and Run”) and a previously unreleased take on the R&B classic “In the Midnight Hour.”

You can see a track listing for the set below, and listen to a previously unheard live version of “Space Cowboy” above.

Miller curated Ultimate Hits, selecting the songs and overseeing the career-spanning project. “Selecting material to include in these two collections and revisiting the creation of these recordings, I’m reminded of how I learned to make multi-track recordings from Les Paul and play lead guitar from T Bone Walker,” he says in a press release announcing the collection. “I’ve been blessed to work with so many wonderful musicians and engineers and friends over the years. Mostly I want to thank you our fans who come out to our shows and listen to our records. I hope you enjoy this as much I did putting this together for you.”

The collection will be available in a single-disc edition that includes three of the previously unreleased tracks. Both versions will also be released on 180-gram vinyl in two-LP and four-LP deluxe packages on Oct. 27, as well as a digital download.

Ultimate Hits is the first release in a new series of Miller reissues that will reportedly include expanded versions of his entire catalog.
