With the World Series starting on Friday, WalletHub set out to find out which American cities are the best for baseball fans based on things like number of MLB and minor league teams, performance of teams, fan engagement and ticket prices.

The study looked at 333 of the largest U.S. cities with at least one college or pro team to find out which is the king of the diamond.

New York, New York took the top overall spot in the study and finished in first place in the MLB category. Los Angeles finished second overall and first in the NCAA category and Atlanta finished third overall.

Rochester, New York finished 139th overall but took the top minor league ranking.

MINNESOTA CITIES

Minnesota's rankings were led by Minneapolis, which finished 12th overall. Minneapolis ended up with a 14th-place ranking in the MLB category, 119th in the MiLB category and 101st in NCAA.

St. Paul was ranked 50th overall, including a 27th place finish in MLB, 52nd in MiLB and 119th place finish in NCAA.

“Baseball is one of America’s most treasured sports, and fans are fiercely loyal to their favorite teams, but fandom can get costly. Enjoying MLB games in person can be quite expensive, for example," said WalletHub's Chip Lupo. "Fortunately, there’s still plenty of excitement to be had supporting Minor League teams or even NCAA baseball at a much cheaper cost. While the top baseball cities tend to be those with the best performing MLB teams, they also often have several teams to cheer on at the Minor League and collegiate levels.”
