Lakes are going to be freezing up soon. Every year there are die hard ice fisherman who wait for those first few inches of ice and trek out for that first fish of the season. If we've learned anything through the coronavirus pandemic, it's that there's been a rush on outdoor gear for people getting outside. I remember going to Fleet Farm this spring and seeing that all of the good tackle was picked through. I never thought I wouldn't be able to find a crawler harness, but there wasn't a single one left on the shelf.

Normally I would go hit up the tackle or bait shop for gear a few days before I would go out. I've already started buying things that I need, knowing that if I wait much longer there won't be much left.

Do you need to ice fishing bibs? Better get them now. I would expect that things like propane heaters, ice scoops, and some tackle will be in short supply. It's better to get them now while there still is a selection. I guarantee there will be a run on portable ice fishing shelters as well.

Even simple items that you normally would take for granted like warm boots, ice fishing gloves, and other clothing could be in short supply. I'm not suggesting anyone panic buy, but just take inventory of what you have and what needs to be replaced.

And finally, if you are someone who normally plans a ice fishing resort trip, you better get those reservations in now. There's going to be a lot of people looking for places to go this winter to get out of the house. That very well mean there will be a lot more people on the lakes.
