There are a lot of astronomical events taking place in February, so look to the skies to see some winter wonder.

TRIPLE CONJUNCTION

We just passed the Triple Conjunction. The Triple Conjunction happened on February 1st with Venus, the moon, and Saturn all lining up after sunset. Saturn was hanging just below the Moon which appeared close to Venus.

SUPERMOON

On Saturday, February 8th, you will see a seemingly extra large full moon, known as a 'Supermoon.' A supermoon is a full moon that falls near the perigee,(the point in the moon's orbit when it is closest to Earth.)

February's Supermoon has also taken on other names including The Snow Moon, The Bone Moon, and The Hunger Moon.

GOODBYE MARS

On February 18th, just before sunrise, Mars is going to disappear behind the moon. This event is called 'occultation' by astronomers. I think it looks like the moon is eating Mars, but then doesn't like the way it tastes, so it will be spitting it out on the other side of the moon about an hour later. Fun!

According to an online article, you will be able to see Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn the entire month of February.

FEBRUARY AND LOVE

Since Valentine's Day is in February, I thought I'd ask the question; Do the planets have anything to do with the month of love?

I found this Valentine's saying: "The goddess of love is at her most radiant when nearby!" Venus shines the brightest in February. Who knew? It will stay bright through the beginning of March but will disappear mid-March and reappear in the mornings sometime in April.
