This Minnesota City Was Named Among The Most Caring In America

When it comes to caring, few cities do it better than Minnesota's capital.

In total, Americans donated over $592 billion to charity in 2024, which is 3.3% higher than the previous year even when adjusted for inflation. For those who, like many, have seen their budgets tighten recently, the number of folks volunteering also rose in 2024.

A recent study by WalletHub looked at factors like caring for the community, caring for the vulnerable members of the population and caring in the workforce to determine the "Most Caring Cities in America."

THE MOST CARING CITY IN AMERICA 

Virginia Beach, Virginia ranked as the 'Most Caring City In America,' thanks in large part to a #1 ranking in the 'Caring for the Community' category. The city ranks first in the nation for volunteering hours while also boasting the fourth-highest number of residents who fundraise for charity.

Virginia Beach also boasts a fairly low property-crime rate (12th lowest) and a low poverty rate.

Rounding out the top five most caring cities were Boston, Massachusetts; Scottsdale, Arizona; Gilbert, Arizona and Fremont, California.

“The most caring cities donate a lot of money to charity and have high volunteer rates, but being a caring city overall requires much more than just giving time or money," said WalletHub's Chip Lupo.

 

"In the top cities, like Virginia Beach, VA, Boston, MA, and Scottsdale, AZ, residents also display their care for others by working in professions that help others, like teaching, social work, firefighting and medicine, at high rates. In addition, the top cities have low crime rates, environmentally-friendly residents and low rates of poverty and homelessness.”

THE MOST CARING CITY IN MINNESOTA 

Minnesota's most caring city is its capital, St. Paul.

St. Paul ranked ninth overall, highlighted by a fifth-place finish in 'Caring for the Community.' The city also finished #11 in 'Caring in the Workforce' and 36th in 'Caring for the Vulnerable.'

Of note, Minneapolis finished 34th overall but tied with St. Paul for the #5 spot in the subcategory of 'Percent of Population Doing Favors for Neighbors.'
