Holy Snow, Batman! Check Out This Small Town in Northern Minnesota
I know that this year has not been like it has been for the last two years or so here in Minnesota. We have had some extra snow this year, at least compared to normal. And they say that the rest of the season should be above normal precipitation, and below normal temps. So, we might have enough snow to do all of the things that you want to do regarding winter snow sports.
MINNESOTA SMALL TOWN WITH EXTREME SNOWFALL
If you REALLY want a lot of snow, there is a small town in Minnesota that is known for cornering the market on snow totals. For that - you will need to drive about 3 hours North to the small town of Finland. It's just North of Split Rock Lighthouse and Little Marais - in that general area. In 2020, there were just 195 people who lived there according to the census.
DID YOU KNOW THERE IS A SNOWBELT IN MINNESOTA
Finland is in the snowbelt of Minnesota. That extends from Duluth to Canada and over to the Iron Range area. And if you think about it, there are three of the best skiing hills in Minnesota in this area. The snowbelt traditionally gets about 70 inches of snow per year on average.
Finland is considered as "Ground Zero" for snowfall amounts. They get, on average, 80-90 inches of snowfall each year.
GREAT AREA FOR ALL THINGS WINTER OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
There are also a lot of snowmobile trails around the area to enjoy. If you like to "fat tire" through the snowy wooded areas, there are areas for you to do that too.
MIGHT BE A GOOD IDEA TO BOOK A TRIP TO NORTHERN MINNESOTA
Might be time to book a trip to Finland, Minnesota. Or at least some areas around there. We are solidly into winter now, even though the calendar still says fall. Let's embrace the things that Minnesota is giving us.
