Five FREE Things To Do With School-Aged Kids In Central Minnesota This Summer

I spend 99% of my days thinking of new, exciting and CHEAP ways to entertain my kids. While I am not outright against spending money, I find it a fun challenge to keep them busy without breaking the bank.

Here are five things I enjoy doing with my kids that (mostly) don't cost a dime!

CHECK OUT STORYTIME AT GREAT RIVER REGIONAL LIBRARY

The Great River Regional Library not only allows you to explore thousands and thousands of free books online and in person, but the library also hosts TONS of events every week that are open to readers of all ages.

We went to a Dog Man event earlier this year and had a great time and now the kids want to go back to the library every week!

TAKE A DIP AT A SPLASH PAD 

The area has several amazing splash pads from Cold Spring's Alexander Park to Sartell's Watab Park and every splash pad in between. Most of the splash pads are adjacent to playgrounds as well, which should help burn off (at least some of) that kid energy.

We like to pack a cooler with sandwiches and snacks to make a day of it.

SPEND A DAY AT MUNICIPAL PARK IN SAUK RAPIDS 

There are plenty of things to do for people and kids of all ages at Sauk Rapids Municipal Park. From the big playground with giant slides, to the gaga ball pit and basketball court to the river itself which is ripe for exploring, it's easy to lose track of a day at this park.

We always make sure to check out the river as well.

EXPLORE MUNSINGER GARDENS 

My kids love running free at Munsinger Gardens, not only in the garden area with its expansive pathways, but also on what they call the "lower level" where they throw rocks into the river.

For added fun, grab a fishing pole and check out the dam for some good panfish action.

GO FISHING AT LAKE GEORGE 

Kids can fish for free on Tuesdays and Fridays from June 10th to August 15th. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and is hosted by the Lake George Fishing Club.

Equipment and bait is provided at no charge and staff is on hand to help with baiting hooks and handling fish. Participants 16 and older will need a fishing license.
