I love summer, but honestly, I think late summer and early fall might be some of my favorite times of the year in Minnesota. The cooler temperatures typically bring the colors of the changing leaves, and the great ability to wear shorts with a sweatshirt at any time you want to. I don't know WHY I love that, but there's something about it being nice and cool outside, and toast warm on the inside.

It's also one of the best times of year to take a hike in one of our beautiful state parks, and the Department of Natural Resources works with the Great River Regional Library to provide FREE parking passes, simply by having a library card.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS

Stop by your local Great River Regional Library or call them and ask for available dates for existing parking passes at that location. They will let you know what weeks are available. Once you choose your week, you will bring your library card to that location, and they will give you a receipt to leave in the dashboard of your vehicle. You can use the pass for up to seven days, and then simply recycle it. There's no need to return the pass to the library, as it will expire after 7 days.

The pass provides free parking to any State park during the week you have your pass, so you can visit as many parks in that time frame as you like.

Does it cover the cost of camping overnight? No. The park pass is just for parking for one vehicle. You would be responsible for any other activities you want to participate in.

No proof of income is necessary. If times are tough right now, and you just want a fun getaway with your family, a Minnesota Park is a great way to get outside, take some great family photos, have a picnic, and great conversation with those you love the most.
