How To Spot Risky Behaviors Is Aim Of “Hidden In Plain Sight”
SARTELL (WJON News) -- The Sartell-St. Stephen Middle School is using conferences to help teach parents about the signs of risky behavior in kids. The school is working with Benton County Human Services to present "Hidden In Plain Sight."
"Hidden In Plain Sight" is an interactive exhibit of a teenager's bedroom designed to show parents how to spot warning signs of risky behaviors and how to talk to their child about it. School Resource Officer Jill Lundquist says it's important to teach parents what to look for:
"Just trying to get our parents educated to know what to look for because our teens are at risk and there's new things that are coming out and we just want parents to be educated on what their kids could be seeing and what could be in their homes."
She says the drug culture is always changing:
"Drug culture is always changing and so it's exhausting trying to keep up with it as a parent so having somebody who knows how to be educated and what to look for is really important, I think for parents."
Lundquist says everyday-looking items like a Sharpie or asthma inhaler could really be drug-related items. She says this is the first year they will have the display at the Middle School but they have used it at the High School before and there will be someone on hand to answer questions as well.
The "Hidden In Plain Sight" display will be up during conferences from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Sartell Middle School on Thursday. It is for parents who have students currently in school only but Lundquist says they hope to be able to open it up for the community in the future.
