It's that time of year again. Nice summer nights outdoors with friends and family. Nothing could be better, until those little vampire bastards, mosquitoes show up to ruin all the fun.

I've often said, that if it wasn't for those bloodsucking little guys, Minnesota would be a perfect paradise in the summertime.

So, what can you do to cut down your chances of being eaten alive by these little guys? June 21st-27th is Mosquito Awareness Week. It's time to get you yard in shape to avoid those annoying predators.  Here are some tips that may make your summer nights as perfect as possible.

Remove water sources.

Standing water is a breeding mosquitoes best friend. Try and drain any standing water and make sure things aren't around that can collect water for the skeeters to breed in.

Avoid scented body products

Some scents actually work in repelling mosquitoes, but it the scents that attract them that you want to avoid.  try stay away from fancy smelling perfumes, colognes, body washes and lotions to make your time outside, during high mosquito activity hours. Dusk til dawn, April through October is prime time for these bloodsuckers.

Wear light colored clothing

Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colored clothing, so avoid wearing any if you plan on spending time outdoors this Summer.

Eucalyptus or DEET?

It may sound like a myth, but according to the Center For Disease Control and Prevention, the oil works to ward off mosquitoes. It's a great alternative for those of us that really aren't comfortable using chemicals like DEET.

Have a great summer and hang onto as much of you blood as possible.
