Hulk Hogan Had Plenty Of Minnesota Ties
Legendary professional wrestler and actor Hulk Hogan, born Terry Bollea, passed away at age 71 this week. Hogan, probably the most important professional wrestler of all time, also starred in movies like "No Holds Barred" and "Mr. Nanny."
Heck, Hogan was so popular in the 1980's he guest starred on music videos and albums and even had his own Saturday morning cartoon series in 1985!
COMING TO MINNESOTA
After a falling out with WWF (now WWE) boss Vincent McMahon over his decision to appear in Rocky III, Hogan defected to the Minnesota-based American Wrestling Association.
While Hogan had been a popular attraction in other markets leading up to his time with the AWA, he reached another level of stardom in Verne Gagne's organization.
After memorable feuds with Jerry Blackwell, Nick Bockwinkel and Bobby Heenan (against whom Hogan teamed up with Andre the Giant), Hogan won the AWA title (before having the win overturned) in 1982 before leaving to rejoin the WWF in 1983.
PASTAMANIA BROTHER
Hogan opened a fast/casual pasta restaurant at Mall of America, 'Pastamania' (a play on Hulkamania), that lasted for less than one year in the mall's food court in 1995. The restaurant had a gimmick offering pasta deliveries within the mall.
SAY YOUR PRAYERS, EAT YOUR VITAMINS....
I would wager there isn't a person in this country over the age of 40 who couldn't instantly recognize Hulk Hogan. My family LOVED professional wrestling when I was growing up and Hogan was so popular that it almost made you root against him. Almost.
