Minnesotans Should Never Put This In The Recycling Bin
Do you know what you should and shouldn't be recycling?
Most of us have several containers set up at home for our waste, right? Well, at least two; one for recyclable materials and one for non-recyclable garbage.
But I just learned something that blew my mind.
THEY ARE NOT RECYCLABLE
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has recently sent us a message. Enjoy your ice cream, but those tubs you thought were recyclable? Not so much!

ICE CREAM TUBS ARE NOT RECYCLABLE -HERE'S WHY
I don't buy ice cream as much as most people, but when I do, I typically save the pails and use them for wash buckets, tubs I sometimes use for storing cookies for the holidays, or to hold other household things that need a cover. Maybe a tub of nails, for example. So I'm not usually throwing them away right away. But when I don't need them, I just rinse them out (when I remember to) and throw them in the recycling bin.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency sent out a message on social media saying that many ice cream containers are lined with a thin layer of plastic that is hard to remove during the 'paper pulping process.'
THE PROBLEM WITH TRYING TO RECYCLE ICE CREAM TUBS
They say that the ice cream tubs, as well as many takeout containers, are lined with a thin layer of plastic that is really hard to remove during the paper pulping process, making these containers hard to recycle.
OTHER NON-RECYCLABLES YOU MIGHT NOW KNOW ABOUT
Although it is appreciated that you were thinking of recycling this item, they say, 'just toss those ice cream and takeout containers in the trash.'
Other items that don't belong in the recycle bin include:
- Plastic bags
- Styrofoam
- Greasy pizza boxes
- Coffee Cups
- Shredded paper
- Ceramics
