Winter is coming.

We can try to deny it and pretend it will just stay 60 degrees until spring, but we know that isn't truly the case.

So, what can we do to make sure our homes are ready for the harsh winter ahead? Sauk Rapids-based Frontier Real Estate Group recently posted some helpful tips on Facebook to make sure your home is prepared when the cold hits.

Their first tip is to be prepared for the first snow/weather event as opposed to trying to scramble when it hits the fan. This includes getting a sturdy snow shovel and stocking up on some water and dry goods in case of an extended weather event.

Maintaining your heating system and making sure it is running as efficiently as possible is something that is easier to do BEFORE a cold snap as opposed to while it happens. Frontier recommends replacing your furnace filter, giving the heater a test run to make sure things run smoothly and hiring an expert to check out your furnace for extra piece of mind.

Several HVAC companies have deals currently available on The Value Connection.

In addition, check your windows for gaps that could allow warm air to escape, then caulk or apply weather stripping where drafts are felt.

It is also a good idea to have a contractor or roofing company come out and check for damaged shingles and/or loose gutters. It is imperative to clear gutters and downspouts before winter as well.
