Farmers' Almanac 2026-2027 Winter Forecast For Minnesota

Ope! This is not something most want to hear about right now. I am not excited for winter but I am definitely ready for fall and cooler temperatures. I know in a few months I will regret saying that, though.

It has just been a little bit too hot for me this summer but after a long winter that felt like it was never going to end, I see why some people love it.

I bit the bullet earlier this month and wrote about the potential of a Super El Niño for our region. While it sounds scary, it is actually the opposite: a nice, mild winter could be in store for us.

Now, more winter outlooks and forecasts are starting to pop up as we near the end of summer. The Farmers' Almanac is the latest to weigh in. If you're feeling brave, let's dive into what they are predicting.

What The Farmers' Almanac Is Predicting For Minnesota

Well, it looks like we may not see a mild winter after all. According to their 2026 - 2027 outlook, we will be seeing another cold winter. They are even predicting a breezy one, which means the air will hurt your face.

The Farmers' Almanac outlook says the upper midwest, including Minnesota, will see near-average temperatures but we can expect 'sudden cold snaps' throughout the season. These cold snaps will make for a not-so-mild winter.

In terms of snow, we can expect 'brief snowy periods' sandwiched between breaks from the snow, meaning we won't see any prolonged snow. Again - don't get too excited because despite this, we could still see 'sudden snow squalls, blustery winds' and periods of bitter cold. How fun.

The Old Farmers' Almanac says overall, it will be a winter of 'snow, sleet and surprises' which sounds a bit scary. Ha! For our neck of the woods, it looks like 'quick bursts of snow and cold' will define our winter.

I guess this means that while we will see a normal winter, it will come and go. As long as we have a little break in-between those wintry bursts, I guess I won't complain.

How does the Farmers' Almanac come up with their outlooks? They have never shared their exact formula but they have been around since 1818 and report an 80 to 85-percent accuracy rate. I am fine with this forecast should it come true.

We will have to wait and see if this outlook rings true. In the meantime, I will be dining at this weather-themed restaurant in Stillwater when it opens later this year! Weather nerds unite!
