I've been a fan of the Gold Rush Alaska shows for years, and recently I got to try panning for gold. It was way more fun than I ever imagined. We were on a trip to Alaska, where we visited the historic gold dredge 8. They taught us how to pan for Gold, and as soon as I saw a few flakes, I was struck by gold fever. The only problem is that I don't live in Alaska. Is there gold back home in Minnesota?

Gold In Northern Minnesota

Yes, there is some gold in Minnesota. There was a short Minnesota Gold Rush that happened from 1865 to 1866.  It was too difficult to extract from the hard rock to make it profitable to mine the gold. But it's definitely there.

It was called the Vermilion Lake Gold Rush. Gold was found in the region embedded in quartz. They found it wasn't profitable to extract the gold from the hard rock. But, a few decades later, they found gold on Little American Island in Rainy Lake.

That was a productive gold mine that ran for years. The Minnesota gold rush is the reason we found iron ore deposits in Northern Minnesota, and also why some of the towns like International Falls, were founded.

Glacial Gold

You can find glacial gold in some places in Minnesota. That's gold flakes that were carried by glaciers as they carved out the Great Lakes region. I learned a lot of geology about this from the YouTuber Glacial Gold Hunter, where he actually does find some gold in Duluth!

Gold In Southeast Minnesota

People still pan for gold in the Zumbro River and St. Croix River.

Side note - I love the fact that he uses a Top The Tater container for loading up his pan full of dirt. That's Minnesotan, right there!
