‘Older Generation’ Things: Whatever Happened To Writing Thank You Cards?

There are plenty of things that we used to do 'back in the day' that don't seem as popular today. Things like having actual photographs, dancing, sewing, and knowing how to fix or repair things have gone to the wayside.

Be honest: Do you still send handwritten thank-you notes, or is a text message enough? Is this a generational thing, or does good etiquette never go out of style?

Growing Up, We Wrote Them For Everything

Growing up in my family meant that after every birthday, holiday, or gathering, we sat down and wrote thank-you cards. It was something that was just done; we didn't ask questions.

As I grew up and moved out of my parents' home, thank-you notes followed. Whether it was a job interview or taking the time to compliment a co-worker for helping out, thank you notes felt like they meant more.

Better Than A Text?

I know going to the mailbox in general means going through the usual 'junk' that is sent while picking out the bills, but seeing a thank-you card generally brightens my day. I feel like someone cared enough to take the time to write something and send it.

How Are Younger Generations Saying Thanks?

Well, the first way that younger generations are expressing their gratitude is often a text. Other ways that Gen Z or Gen Alpha are saying thanks are:

• Sending photos of themselves using a gift
• Posting a public thank-you on social media
• Treating someone to coffee or lunch
• Sending a heartfelt voice message
• Giving gifts in return

No Matter How You Say It, Saying Thank You Doesn't Go Out Of Style

I guess no matter how people say it, saying thank you and giving recognition of having received something is timeless, but it's how we express it that has changed over the years.
