This morning, I had to have my morning show partner, Laura, explain the current protein health craze to me. I have noticed that the amount of protein in foods has taken a bigger role on the label, but I’m not much of a trend-follower.

The trend of eating more protein is booming, driven by its strong links to weight loss, muscle building, and overall health/fitness, with consumers adding protein to everything from snacks to beverages for sustained energy and better aging support, fueled by social media and a focus on wellness post-pandemic.

Experts note most people already get enough protein, emphasizing whole foods and strategic intake over excessive supplementation.

Subway has joined the new protein craze currently sweeping across the country with their new Protein Pockets. The chain says:

"Each Protein Pocket piles on more than 20 grams of protein, making it a smart choice for protein-conscious guests and flavor seekers alike"

Here are the details:

PROTEIN POCKETS

  • Baja Chicken – features grilled chicken, Monterey cheddar cheese, “smoky” Baja chipotle sauce, lettuce, Roma tomatoes, and jalapeño peppers.
  • Peppercorn Ranch Chicken – grilled chicken, Monterey cheddar cheese, “zesty” Peppercorn Ranch dressing, lettuce, Roma tomatoes, and pickles.
  • Italian Trip – Black Forest Ham, aged pepperoni, Genoa salami, Monterey cheddar cheese, lettuce, Roma tomatoes, and mayonnaise.
  • Turkey & Ham – oven-roasted turkey, Black Forest ham, Monterey cheddar cheese, Roma tomatoes, and mayonnaise.

In addition, Subway is offering a Daily Value Menu deal that gets you a different classic six-inch sub every day of the week for $4.99, and for an extra $2, you can get a drink, chips, or a cookie.

The daily menu features these subs:

  • Meatball Monday – Meatball Marinara
  • Tuna Tuesday – Classic Tune
  • Sweet Onion Wednesday – Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki
  • Turkey Thursday – Oven-Roasted Turkey
  • Forest Ham Friday – Black Forest Ham
  • BMT Saturday – Italian B.M.T.
  • Spicy Italian Sunday – Spicy Italian

So, if you’re into the protein trend, Subway has you covered. Or, if you’re looking for a decent lunch at a good price (like me), they have you covered as well. Feel free to stop, try them out, and tell me what you think!
