A new KSTP/SurveyUSA poll suggests Minnesota voters aren’t feeling especially warm toward either of the big names at the top of the ballot right now.

The survey questioned 650 Minnesotans, with the sample breaking down to about 35% Democrats, 30% Republicans, and 29% independents. And across the board, the mood was pretty sour.

For Governor Tim Walz, the numbers mark the lowest approval ratings of his time in office. Just 45% of respondents say they approve of the job he’s doing, while 51% say they don’t. Another 3% are undecided.

President Trump’s numbers in Minnesota aren’t any better. The poll shows 39% approval and 59% disapproval, with 2% saying they’re unsure.

Immigration appears to be a major factor driving those opinions. When asked specifically about Trump’s immigration enforcement policies, 61% of Minnesotans said they disapprove, compared to 38% who approve. Views on the tactics used by ICE and Border Patrol were even more negative, with 64% disapproving and 35% approving.

At the same time, opinions get more mixed when local law enforcement enters the picture. Half of respondents say local police should help enforce federal immigration laws, while 36% say they shouldn’t. Another 13% aren’t sure.

All of this comes just days before caucus night in Minnesota, set for February 3 — making this one of the final snapshots of voter sentiment before the political calendar heats up even more.
