A stage musical based on the life of Joe Mauer is now playing in Hopkins, Minnesota.

"The Right Thing To Do: The Joe Mauer Story" is based on the book of the same name, written by former Minnesota sportscaster Joe Schmit. It tells the story of Mauer's life, focusing on his positive attitude, compassion and honesty.

I had a chance to check out the play with my mom and my eight-year-old son on Saturday afternoon and we had a great time.

STAGES THEATRE IN HOPKINS

The Stages Theatre is a really neat and modern theatre located right in the heart of Downtown Hopkins. The staff was very friendly and helpful and our seats were very close to the stage despite costing only about $15.

The stage and scenery were great. There was a video projection on the wall, which showed clips of Joe Mauer's Hall of Fame induction at the beginning, and the set itself had a lot of cool baseball-themed art.

JOE MAUER MUSICAL

The first act focuses on young Joe Mauer, played by Baron Heinz. The grade-school aged Mauer breaks a neighbor's window while playing baseball in a place he was told not to play. The young baseball player then debates whether to tell his parents the truth or tell a lie to shift the blame to someone else.

The second act features Mauer picking a less-talented player to be on his baseball team during a pickup game. Ignoring the criticisms of his peers, Mauer helps to teach the kid some baseball skills, while they in turn teach Mauer some pointers on drawing and sketching.

The third act shows teenage Joe Mauer, played by Charlie Gold, taking a blind student under his wing and offering him a seat at a lunch table full of Mauer's friends. He then gets into trouble for a food fight that happens at his table.

THE RIGHT THING TO DO: THE JOE MAUER STORY REVIEW

With tons of really fun songs and a short run time (less than one hour at our showing), the play was perfect for kids of all ages! The cast was really fun, talented and clearly was well-rehearsed... they did a great job!

When it was over, the cast lined up in the lobby to sign autographs for the kids who had just seen them perform.
