Listen to New Brian Wilson Song ‘Run James Run’
Brian Wilson has released a new song from his upcoming compilation album Playback. You can hear "Run James Run" above.
The track -- one of two new songs found on Playback: The Brian Wilson Anthology, which covers 30 years of Wilson's solo work -- sounds like a throwback to Wilson's Beach Boys days, complete with harmonies and a summertime vibe. "Run James Run" was recorded specifically for the new album.
The 18-track set will be released on Sept. 22.
The anthology's other new track, "Some Sweet Day," premiered earlier this month and was originally recorded in the '90s and comes from an abandoned project Wilson worked on with producer Andy Paley, who has collaborated on many of Wilson's solo projects over the past three decades.
In addition to the new tracks and a selection of songs pulled from the nearly dozen LPs Wilson has recorded since his self-titled 1988 solo debut (like his 2004 re-imagining of Smile, the fabled Beach Boys project that sat on the shelf for almost 45 years), Playback includes a pair of cuts -- “The First Time” and “This Isn’t Love” -- from 2000's Live at the Roxy.
Wilson is still on the road through mid October, playing shows in celebration of the Beach Boys' classic Pet Sounds album for its 50th anniversary. He has said that this will be the final time he'll play the 1966 album in its entirety. He last released a solo album, No Pier Pressure, in 2015.
