Manager Accused of Embezzling $1 Million from Minnesota Company

Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News)- A manager at a Minnesota manufacturing company is accused of stealing more than $1 million from her employer.

That’s according to a federal indictment announced in a news release issued Wednesday by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minnesota. 

The court document accuses her of using her position to embezzle the company’s funds and converting the funds to use for her own benefit. The woman charged in the embezzlement scheme is identified as 51-year-old Monica Svobodny. 

Court documents allege the Eden Prairie woman embezzled the funds while working as Supply Chain and Engineering Manager at Sico, Inc, which is an Edina-based furniture and home furnishing manufacturing company. 

The news release accuses Svobodny of using company credit cards to buy designer clothing, spa services, and luxury hotel stays. She’s alleged to have covered those credit card expenses by marking them as pending for accounting purposes. 

The indictment also accuses Svobodny of using the company's credit cards to transfer funds to herself via Paypal more than 300 times and fraudulently editing some of the transactions to show as payments to a company that turned out to be defunct. 

In all  Svobodny is accused of willingly embezzling over $1,137,000 from the company. The indictment charges her with one count of wire fraud. 

Svobodny’s first federal court appearance in the case has not yet been scheduled.
