Minnesota Home Owners Should Do This Before Cold Temps Arrive
CEILING FANS CAN HELP YOU CONTROL YOUR TEMPS
Do you have ceiling fans in your house? Are you aware that the direction your ceiling fan is spinning can help you either stay cooler or warmer depending on the direction that it's spinning? Yes! It's true.
CLOCKWISE OR COUNTERCLOCKWISE?
I have two ceiling fans upstairs in my home, and one downstairs. Depending on where you live in my house, might determine which direction you want your fan spinning at any given time; but generally, these are the rules.
SUMMER
Ceiling fans don't actually cool air in the summer; but they can make it FEEL cooler if you've got them spinning in the right direction. In summer or what you consider to be hot months, you'll want your ceiling fan blades spinning in a counterclockwise direction. According to an article, when the blades spin counterclockwise, they push the cool air down in a column, creating a 'wind chill' effect. If you want it to really cool your house down, then you should set your fan at its highest speed.
If you are not sure if your fan is spinning counterclockwise, stand directly under it and look up. If the fan is spinning counterclockwise, you will feel a rush of air. If you don't feel it, you should probably flip the switch to the other direction, and then stand under the fan. You should now feel the rush of air.
WINTER
Since we are starting to feel the cooler temperatures now, you'll want to start thinking about flipping the direction of your ceiling fan to clockwise. IF you need to warm up your space.
Since warm air is actually lighter than cold air, it can stay warm up by the ceiling, and make it feel colder in the room. If your ceiling fan blades are spinning clockwise, the blades can push the warm air down towards the floor, and push up the cold air on the floor towards the ceiling.
KEEP THOSE BLADES CLEAN
Generally, clean blades are going to work better than dusty ones; so before you switch directions on your ceiling fan this season, carefully wipe them clean before you start them up for the next season.
Good luck!
