The Great Minnesota Get Together may not happen this year, but the Fine Arts Department has said that the Fine Arts Competition will go on!

An update at the official Minnesota State Fair website states that the annual fine arts exhibition will be held as usual this year with all art pieces being submitted digitally. In 2019, a total of 2,747 pieces were submitted, and 354 works were accepted.

This year, like last year, there will be eight classes of art work:

  • Class 1 – Oil/Acrylic/Mixed Media
  • Class 2 – Sculpture
  • Class 3 – Watercolor/Gouache/Casein/Tempera
  • Class 4 – Drawings/Pastel
  • Class 5 – Prints
  • Class 6 – Ceramics/Glass
  • Class 7 – Textiles/Fiber
  • Class 8 – Photography

Registration for the art competition opened April 6, 2020 and will close July Monday, 27 2020 at 4:30pm. Once registered, all artists must submit at least one digital image of their piece; a total of three digital images is permitted. Jurors will review submitted digital images to determine which works will be in the final exhibition. The jury will consist of recognized individuals in their respective media. Art pieces selected for the final exhibition will be displayed in the Fine Arts Exhibition building between August 27-September 7.

Last year's commemorative piece -- recognized before the State Fair opened -- was a photo composite of the previous year's (2018) livestock grand champions. "For this photograph, Minnesota State Fair Supreme Champion Pairings from 2018," he said in  a statement, "I created portraits of the top male and female open-class exhibition winners in the goat, swine, poultry, sheep, llama, rabbit, beef cattle, draft horse and stock dog categories." Each photo was then composited together into one final image.
