National Pretzel Day is celebrated on April 26th every year and recognizes one of America's favorite snacks. If you've ever wondered about the origin of pretzels, National Day Calendar shared that it is traced back to monks and Christianity:

There are a few different accounts of the origin of the pretzel.  Most people agree that it does have a Christian background, and they were developed by the monks.  According to The History of Science and Technology, in 610 AD, “an Italian monk invents pretzels as a reward to children who learn their prayers.  He calls the strips of baked dough, folded to resemble arms crossing the chest, pretiola (little rewards).”

Another interesting pretzel facts include Pennsylvania being the center of American pretzel production for both the hard and soft varieties. They produce 80% of the nation’s pretzels. Knowing that it makes so much more sense why "Pretzel Day" was such a big deal on the TV show The Office. Happy Pretzel Day!
