It’s Juneteenth This Friday, June 19th – What’s Closed for the Day?
This Friday is Juneteenth, and it is considered as a Federal holiday. So, I am checking on what's open and what's closed for the day.
THIS FRIDAY, WHAT WILL BE OPEN AND WHAT WILL BE CLOSED
Most of the normal businesses that are closed for a Federal holiday will be closed this Friday. That includes the post office, most banks, and some public offices. Court will not be in session either.
Most other businesses will be open. You can expect most garbage collection to be on schedule. If they aren't, check the garbage company you use. Most will be running as normal, but there may be some that will delay a day in observation of the holiday. Most stores and malls will remain open, as will grocery stores in the area.
WHAT IS JUNETEENTH AND WHY IS IT A FEDERAL HOLIDAY
Juneteenth is June 19th. It became a recognized federal holiday back in 2021. Juneteenth marks the day that the enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were belatedly informed that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. They weren't the only ones, either. Many of the slaves were not informed that they were actually free until quite some time afterwards. They could keep working where they had been; if they wanted to, they just needed to be paid. And many plantation owners were not willing to do that.
As far as what is closed or open, as stated above, the federal/government offices and services will be closed. Emergency services will operate normally. But do not be surprised if some other non-government services are also closed. It is up to the business to either be open or closed on that day.
ACTIVITIES TO ATTEND THIS FRIDAY IN THE ST CLOUD AREA FOR JUNETEENTH
It's actually the 30th annual celebration for Juneteenth, even though it was only made a federal holiday since 2021. There are a lot of things to do that day that includes activities for the entire family.
