I love hearing about the history of businesses that live in central Minnesota. About a month ago, I had the pleasure of speaking with Kim Meyer and Jake Meyer from Mid-State Tile, located on Lincoln Avenue in St. Cloud.
Mid-State Tile has just opened up a completely remodeled showroom and will be holding a Grand Open House Celebration on Monday, November 10th, and they are inviting everyone to stop by for refreshments and a once-in-a-lifetime, never-before-deal to celebrate.

94 YEARS IN BUSINESS

I had no idea that Mid-State Tile was a 5-generation family-owned business and had been in business for over 94 years. What was really interesting was the way it all came to be here in central Minnesota.
Jake Meyer, a charming young man, is the most recent family member to take over ownership since January 31st, 2023. Jake grew up learning the tile trade and has always wanted to be in the family business. "It's been in the family a long time, and it was something that pretty much I always knew I wanted to do," Jake said. His mother, Kim Meyer, who has served in many capacities throughout the years, was so excited that her son wanted to take over the business. "It's exactly the way we wanted it to go," Kim said. Jake has a sister as well, but she desired to work in the health industry. "She was very studious...so she's working in the medical field and will soon graduate and be a doctor of Internal medicine," said Jake.

MEET ART OMEY

Mid-State Tile started all the way back in 1931. A man named Art Omey was in the tile business with his brothers in Chicago. Unfortunately, things didn't work out so well with his brothers. So Art decided that he would head out on his own and start over in Minneapolis.

 AS TRAVELS WOULD HAVE IT...

As Art was traveling to Minneapolis late at night, he accidentally ended up passing the Twin Cities altogether. He was on Highway 10 and ended up on Highway 10 and Highway 23, which is now Lincoln Avenue and Highway 23. Art pitched a tent at that very location and sold his first tile job out of that tent.

Art then took on his nephew, Cornelius (they called him Ricey Meyer), who purchased it from Art. Cornelius then put his two sons to work, Jerry and Bobby Meyer, who then became owners. In 1981, Jerry purchased Mid-State Tile from his brother Bobby, and Jerry's son-in-law Mike Roden, started working for him full-time, in the year 1981, and then Tom, Jerry's son (Kim's husband and Jake's Dad), started working in 1987.

The business was then passed on to Jerry's son, Tom Meyer, and his son-in-law, Mike Roden, in 1993. In 2023, Mike and Tom sold the business to Jake (his son) and to long-time employees Luke Schwartz and Brandon Reckinger.  On January 31st of 2026, they will be three years in business.
Tom’s dad, Jerry, would be so proud to see how Mike and Tom kept the business successful even in hard times, and how proud he would be to have his grandson, Jake, along with Brandon and Luke, carrying on the family business.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

"It was challenging right away, transitioning in. I was fairly young to a completely new gig (in the company), but we've had fun. We are working on a lot of updates; getting rid of some older tiles that some people still call for, but we can't hold everything, unfortunately." Jake said.

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION

They are probably one of the only companies around that can say they've held on to tile for 30+ years for their customers. It's one of those things they've become known for. They will still get those phone calls, every now and then, and sometimes, even their competitors will refer them to clients looking for some of those older tiles, stating that Mid-State Tile might be the only place that might still have what they are looking for.
Jake said, 'Sometimes we will even put some old tiles out for free, for people who want to do their own tile projects.'

JAKE'S CREATIVE SPIRIT

Jake is a creative spirit. He lights up when he talks about the business, and uses that creative energy to bring a new light to Mid-State Tile. He is described as an old soul who enjoys working alongside the others at Mid-State Tile, and in addition, is all about bringing in new technologies to bring them into the future.
Mid-State Tile does both Residential and Commercial projects. They love doing showers, kitchen backsplashes, and even stacked stone on fireplaces. There are approximately 24 amazing employees who install every day solely for Mid-State Tile working with homeowners and contractors alike.

BRAND NEW SHOWROOM

Mid-State Tile has just gone through a major remodel. They have a brand new, beautiful showroom. It was a design that Jake had in his mind that Brandon and Luke brought to life with their lifetime of experience. and they are having a Grand Open House Celebration on November 10th, inviting everyone to come in, and take advantage of a great deal. They are offering 20% off labor on residential projects when you stop by from November 10th through December 10th, 2025.
You can listen to my interview with Jake and Kim from Mid-State Tile by clicking on the player below.

OUT WITH THE OLD...

The old showroom had been there for 30-40 years, and it was Jake's grandfather who had installed all the tile originally. The generations to follow installed layer after layer of tile. Mid-State Tile has survived the test of time. The existing location used to be Jake's Grandpa Jerry's home.
They are so excited about the new transformation, with a brightly lit showroom. You can see all of the amazing tiles on display. There are new displays, updated tiles, looks and so much more. You have to see it for yourself.
