It’s the start of a new year, and that means that there are plenty of things to look forward to. Maybe this will finally be the year you finish that project you’ve been working on forever, or maybe you’ll finally meet the love of your life and lose 20 pounds. But whatever it is that you’re hoping for, I promise, it’s not as important as this…

A NEW TOOL ALBUM IN 2018!?!?!

Yeah, that’s right. Tool’s long awaited 5th studio album takes precedent over your silly New Year’s resolutions. It’s more important than losing weight or getting married. Heck, it’s even more important than the “Han Solo” film being released this May. Why, you ask? Allow me to elaborate.

Tool, is by far, the most intellectual rock band of all time. They’re smarter than Pink Floyd and Rush combined. Go back and analyze their last three albums. “Aenima” “Lateralus” and “10,000 Days” are more than just head banging, metal albums. Each of them have a thought provoking narrative. “Aenima” deals with the revolutionary psychology of Swiss psychologist, Carl Jung. “Lateralus” (my personal favorite) discusses everything from alchemy, to hermetic philosophy. They even incorporate the Fibonacci sequence into the pacing of the lyrics on the title track. And “10,000 Days” roughly follows the story of the archetypal, mythological hero, and the innate follies of mankind.

The details of Tool’s lyrical content are too complex to discuss here, but a simple Google search will provide you with more than enough information and fan theories to keep you busy for months. Sitting in a dark room, listening to their albums full blast through a surround sound system by myself completely changed my life and the way I think about the world. And I know that there are thousands of other Tool fans who have had exactly the same experience. Give their music a chance, and listen with an open mind. You won’t regret it. Anyway, I digress.

Their most previous album “10,000 Days” was released 12 years ago, and ever since, we Tool fans have been eagerly awaiting new material. The anticipation is high, not only because it has been such a long time since we’ve heard new music from the band, but also because this will likely be Tool’s final effort. Now, there have been plenty of false alarms regarding the release of a new Tool album. For the past several years, certain members of the band have falsely claimed that the new album was going to be released “soon.” But with the recent statements from three of the four band members, confirming a 2018 release, I’m confident that this will FINALLY be the year that world hears new Tool music.

I was fortunate enough to see them perform last June at the Xcel energy center in Minneapolis, and am going to see them again this May at Northern Invasion (just South of the Minnesota state boarder.) I think this is Tool’s year, but unfortunately, no new album yet. We’ll have to continue to be patient. I leave you with some fitting lyrics from lead singer, Maynard James Keenan. “Gonna wait it out, be patient, I must keep reminding myself of this, gonna wait it out.”
