As someone who loves both reading and Halloween, this is my favorite time of year. There’s nothing quite as fun as sitting down, alone, in the dark with a scary book this season. But let’s face it – there are A LOT of horror novelists and therefore, even more horror books to sift through if you’re going to try to find a good one.

Well today dear reader, I’m going to help you out a little bit on your quest to frighten yourself silly.  We’re going to narrow it down to who the top 10 horror novelists of all time are so you can make your reading selection a little easier to handle. Drum roll please. Here we go.

  1. Dean Koontz
  2. Clive Barker
  3. Peter Straub
  4. Washington Irving
  5. Edgar Allan Poe
  6. Bram Stoker
  7. Mary Shelley
  8. H.P. Lovecraft
  9. Anne Rice
  10. Stephen King (albeit, overrated nowadays)

Assuming you probably don't have the time to read ten different novels this month, if I had to narrow it down to just one, personally I'd have to go with Washington Irving. "The Headless Horseman" is probably my favorite Halloween legend of all time. But H.P. Lovecraft and the mighty Edgar Allan Poe are close seconds.
