This Saturday is the official fishing opener in Minnesota.  Why the fishing opener always happens on Mother's Day is beyond me.  But, if I do think about it, a lot of moms might want to spend "their day" fishing.  It's relaxing, you are out in a boat, and just enjoying the outdoors.  Especially this year.  This weekend is supposed to be in the 80s and sunny.

I'm sure that most people, if you like to fish a lot, have a little "honey hole" that they swear by and catch the best and most fish.  Generally, this sweet spot is secret, or at least a spot that not many people know about and they would like to keep it that way.  And with over 11 thousand lakes in Minnesota, it's possible to have your own spot where little to no one knowing about it.

TOP 5 LAKES FOR FISHING IN MINNESOTA

Now, this does depend on what type of fish you are fishing for.  Of course, many people are looking for Walleye.  That does seem to be the most popular fish, but the limit is low.  So if you catch one, and it's within the guidelines, then you are good to go, and day is done.  Unless, of course, you want to keep fishing. There is always the catch and release option.

MILLE LACS LAKE

Great for walleye.

LEECH LAKE

This lake is also known for walleye, but Leech Lake is also known for many other species of fish, so you might have some great luck.  One downfall is that there will probably be A LOT of other people out there doing the same thing.  But it's a big lake.

LAKE OF THE WOODS

Head up to the Canadian border. Lake of the Woods is known for muskies, walleye and Northern pike.

LAKE VERMILLION

This lake is great because it has a mixture of depths.  Great shallow water fishing along with some much deeper waters.  People have good luck catching walleye and muskie, but also some smallmouth bass.

LAKE WINNIBIGOSHISH

This lake might get you some trophy sized fish!  Known for walleye and Northern pike.

Whatever lake you decide to go to, or maybe you are just going to fish off the dock at your cabin, this is going to be a great weekend for all of the things.  Fishing and mom.  Great combination, right?
