The one word I would use after watching Tuesday's Vice Presidential Debate between Tim Walz and JD Vance is: refreshing.

I'll be honest, I am pretty apolitical and do not pledge allegiance to any one party. My voting record includes candidates from both sides of the political aisle, because I agree with some of the ideals of each.

I resent the fact that we are presented with Donald Trump and Kamala Harris as the candidates for President of the United States. Is this truly the best we have?

Trump, while entertaining, just cannot seem to get out of his own way (defending his golf game, arguing about his rally attendance and whether anyone leaves early), while I am not sure Harris spoke from the heart (or the top of her head) one time during the entire debate against Trump.

I left that debate knowing exactly how the two feel about each other but I had absolutely no idea what either of their actual ideals or policies were. I had no clue what steps they were going to take after taking office, what their vision for the future was.

It felt more like having to choose which divorcing parent you had to live with.

Vance and Walz both effectively stated their policies and each gave a background on how they came to hold their ideals. When they disagreed, they addressed each other respectfully and even allowed each other to finish their thought before offering their counter-point.

Shockingly, they even admitted to agreeing with each other on some points!

Tuesday's debate reminded me of the debates I would watch years ago, when we voted on a CANDIDATE and didn't vote based solely on PARTY.

In a sane world, JD Vance and Tim Walz would be the Presidential candidates. Two people who lived actual, normal lives where they had to start from scratch to get where they are. They have relatable American families with young children and have different viewpoints on what is best for them.

I may not agree with everything they said, but I appreciated their honesty and their passion, which is more than I can say about Trump/Harris.
