This year is really about appreciating the little things, and a bright field of sunflowers is one of them. I know for myself, there is nothing that brings a simpler smile to my face than driving past a big crop of giant yellow sunflowers. They are a welcome surprise amongst the corn and soybeans we usually see in our area.

Where can you take in the sights of a sunflower field this summer? There are plenty of options thanks to a Minnesota man tending for them out of the good of his heart.

Johnny Fish is from Monitcello and has been bringing joy to people through flowers for the past five years.

For the last 5+ years I have been planting sunflower fields in the north west metro as a way to say thank you for your local support, but mostly to connect families and friends through the love of sunflowers and the beauty and happiness they bring. In today’s world, now more than ever, we need to spread the sunshine.

Sunfower fields usually bloom for about 10 days, so their time of enjoyment is limited, but Johnny has planted numerous fields so they will be able to be enjoyed the rest of summer. Here is a schedule for estimated blooms.

  • Andover - Estimated Bloom Time is Sept 6th
  • Big Lake -  Estimated Bloom Time is August 20th
  • Dayton - Estimated Bloom Time is August 10th
  • Monticello - Estimated Bloom Time is August 10th
  • Orrock - Estimated Bloom Time is August 10th
  • Otsego - Estimated Bloom Time is September 6th
  • Zimmerman - Estimated Bloom Time is August 23rd

There are a few rules to follow when you visit a Fish Sunflower field:

  • This is not an event or special invitation. The fields are on private property.

  • You are visiting at your own risk.

  • We ask that you maintain social distancing.

  • Don’t litter or leave trash of any kind….including glitter.

  • There are no restrooms available.

These fields have been graciously donated for people's enjoyment, so please be respectful and don't destroy the flowers so others can enjoy them as well. TO stay up to date on the fields and flowers, visit the Fish Sunflowers website, or join their Facebook group.
