Wallethub just released a report on the real cost of smoking by each state, and Minnesota came in close to the top for the most costly state to be a smoker in.
An estimated 36.5 million people in the U.S. are smokers. Americans spend more than $300 billion, which includes both medical care and lost productivity. Wallethub calculated the potential monetary losses per person, including both the lifetime and annual cost of a cigarette pack per day, health care expenditures, income losses and other costs -- brought on by smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke.
The least expensive state to be a smoker in is Kentucky, with a total cost of $1,145,128. The most expensive is New York at $2,330,381.
