We are in a good long stretch of winter right now. Below zero temperatures, weather advisories, and the risk of frostbite and hypothermia are something we’re all facing right now.

We’re also facing another strong issue, and that’s the flu. Coming out of the Christmas holiday, there were so many cases of the flu, it has affected production in a lot of workplaces because of the number of people who were all out at the same time.

The CDC says we are still seeing the highest number of flu cases around the country. My wife and I have a friend who battled the flu and felt terrible for several days.

I asked him if he went to the doctor, and the reply was “No, what are they going to do but tell me to rest and hydrate”. Is that really all that can be done for the flu?

The CDC recommends as soon as you start feeling the symptoms of flu to start taking antiviral flu medications. They recommend if you take Tamiflu and drugs like this within the first two days of the symptoms starting, you stand a good chance to reduce the severity and strength of the flu virus that is making you feel like crud.

The CDC does say that most people don’t have to seek medical attention because their bodies can begin to fight the illness with rest and hydration as my friend mentioned earlier. But they also say that if the symptoms persist, that’s when you should call your doctor.

Over the counter medications such as Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, Decongestants, and Antihistamines will be effective in helping you get on the mend.

Again, if you get the antiviral meds started quickly, it doesn’t have to come to that.

Symptoms of the flu include:

Fever or chills

Cough

Sore Throat

Runny or Stuffy Nose

Muscle or Body Aches

Headaches

Fatigue

There have been some cases that have reported having diarrhea and/or vomiting with their flu symptoms.

Paying attention to your body and what it is telling you can make a big difference if you pick up the virus. Act quickly to help you feel better sooner.
