Would Minnesotans Wait 40 Minutes for This Inspiring Cashier?
I just have one question for you. Would there ever be a circumstance where you would wait in line at a grocery store for 40 minutes just to make sure you were in line to see a specific cashier?
Believe it or not, there IS such a place; and surprisingly, it's not in the land of 'Minnesota Nice.' It’s not a new restaurant, a concert, or a grand opening. It’s a checkout lane at a neighborhood grocery store.
ONE SPECIAL CASHIER MAKES EVERYONE'S DAY...EVERY DAY
At a Publix store in Acworth, Georgia, customers aren’t looking for the shortest line. Many of them are scanning the registers to see if one particular employee is working. If he is, they’ll gladly wait 30 to 40 minutes just to be helped by him.
His name is Michael Masterangelo, and for the past decade, he’s been a familiar face at that store. Michael has an intellectual disability, but to his customers, that’s not what defines him. What they talk about is his smile, his energy, his honesty, and the way he makes every person feel important when they come to his checkout lane.

Regular shoppers say a visit to his checkout lane can turn a normal errand into the best part of their day. He greets people like he’s known them for years, remembers their stories, and sends them off with encouragement.
But it’s not just his personality that has people talking.

A GOLD MEDAL FOR TEAM SPIRIT
Michael has been involved with Special Olympics since he was a kid, and this year he decided to help raise money for the program in a very simple way. He would ask for support simply from his register.
As customers checked out, he invited them to donate to support the Special Olympics.
Much to Michael's surprise, in less than ONE week, Michael had raised more than $31,000 all by himself for Special Olympics; one small contribution at a time.
CUSTOMERS WHO LOVE MICHAEL WANTED TO GIVE
That number surprised even the store’s management. It was more than some entire regions raise during similar campaigns. One especially generous customer donated over a thousand dollars in a single transaction.
But the real story isn’t just the amount of money. It’s the connection.
SUPPORTING A MAN WHO MAKES EVERYONE FEEL GOOD
Customers don’t just support his fundraiser. They support him. Some show up at his Special Olympics games. Others make a point to stop in the store to say hello. Many are willing to stand in a long line because they know they’ll leave smiling.
His mother says seeing the community rally around her son has been emotional in the best way possible. She knows he’s built a place for himself where he’s valued, respected, and loved.
And it raises an interesting question here at home.
COULD THIS HAPPEN IN MINNESOTA?
Minnesota is known for showing up. We support our local fundraisers, we rally around Special Olympics athletes, and we pride ourselves on treating people with kindness.
So if there were a checkout lane in a Minnesota grocery store run by someone like Michael, someone who raised more than $30,000 for Special Olympics with nothing more than a positive attitude and a big heart, would people here wait 40 minutes just to meet him?
