From Tuscany to Two Harbors: How 2026 Tariffs Could Change the Price of Pasta in MN
If you are a fan of authentic Italian pasta, you may want to start stocking up, as 2026 could bring significant changes to your favorite grocery store's pasta aisle. Potentially higher tariffs are still on the table for pasta coming to the US from Italy, meaning some of your favorite Italian pasta may not be available or could be significantly more expensive.
Pasta La Vista, Baby
The cause of the potentially higher prices on Italian pasta, like Barilla, would be caused by a 95% new tariff that COULD take hold in early 2026. The tariff, which Yahoo! Finance has identified as "a new 92% antidumping duty on Italian pasta makers," would be added to the existing 15% tariff on European imports to create a 107% tariff on Italian pasta.
If importers are really serious about bringing in Italian pasta to the US if the new tariffs kick in, we'll be paying a whole lot more for spaghetti.
Feeling A Little Shell-Shocked
So why is the Italian pasta industry being targeted? Back in 2024, two US companies reached out to the Department of Commerce, claiming certain Italian pasta companies were selling their products below market value in the US, which is often called dumping.
Right Now, The Tariffs Are Farfalle From A Certainty
The tariff, which would take place starting January 2nd, could still be delayed or taken off the table entirely by the White House, and we've seen that happen before with Chinese tariff increases this year.
But if it does happen, certain businesses will eventually start to feel the pinch or have to switch to a more cost-effective product. Think Italian restaurants, grocery stores, packaging companies, and even trucking firms could feel the effects of the tariffs.
