Super El Niño Incoming: What It Means For Minnesota This Winter
Winter is not too far off. I know that you are going to be mad at me for saying this but we all know summers are short and fly by in the Northland. By the time fall rolls around, anything could happen (like snow)!
For example, the Old Farmer's Almanac was predicting snow for our region last September. Thankfully, they aren't singing the same tune this time around so it's likely we won't be seeing any snow next month in Minnesota or Wisconsin.
However, despite the fact that we might not see snow next month, we all know that winter is right around the corner. It's best to know what we are in for so you can be prepared - at least you can start mentally preparing. Ha!
This winter will be impacted by a Super El Niño. This sounds a little bit scary so let's dive into what it means and how it will impact the season we aren't looking forward to right now.
What Is A Super El Niño & How Will It Impact Minnesota?
A Super El Niño is likely on the way and that would change our winter outlook quite a bit! Just last month, the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center says that El Niño will continue to strengthen into the end of the year.

There's also a nearly one-hundred percent chance this current El Niño will turn into a Super El Niño, continuing into the spring of 2027. With chances for a Super El Niño extremely high, let's dive into what that could bring us this winter.
What Does A Super El Niño Mean For Minnesota This Winter?
If things continue on the track they are right now, a Super El Niño would bring what we expect from a normal El Niño winter but just on a stronger level. This would mean warmer temperatures across the state come this winter.

It would also likely mean that we see less snow. Last winter was brutal, so I wouldn't mind a slightly more mild winter. However, it looks like things are on track to be pretty mild, especially for the Northland.
Don't get too excited just yet. Some of the biggest snowstorms in the state have happened during a strong El Niño. Drought also has a big influence on things. I would like a winter somewhere in the middle - but we'll have to wait and see!
