Minnesotans Gasp As Beloved Arena Drops Its Name After 25 Years

Since it opened 25 years ago, the building has only ever had one name. Now, after a quarter‑century, Minnesotans are stunned to learn they’ll soon have to call it something else.

Like most commercial agreements, naming rights expire, and that holds true for arenas and stadiums. After two decades or more, it’s common for venues to get a new title once the rights lapse.

A Rare Rebrand in Minnesota Sports

This hasn’t happened often here in Minnesota. The only instance that comes to mind is when the Metrodome became Mall of America Field. Still, this upcoming change may be tough for fans to embrace.

The Minnesota Wild announced that the naming rights for the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul expire this summer, and Xcel Energy will not renew its contract. That means the legendary home of the Wild gets a fresh identity in the 2025–2026 NHL season, and yes, fans will have to stop calling it “The X”.

Farewell to “The X” in Minnesota

Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold said, “Xcel Energy has been an incredible supporter of our team since our inaugural season, and we look forward to continuing to collaborate with them on a number of unique community initiatives as part of our new, long-term partnership.”

While Xcel Energy will maintain a presence in the team’s arena and online platforms, it clearly opted out of committing tens of millions for renewed naming rights. The Wild expects to unveil the new name before the next season begins.

Back in 2000, Xcel Energy paid $75 million for the initial naming rights. Industry insiders suggest the next deal could fetch over $150 million.
