Over the weekend Starbucks announced a new policy that basically allows people to hang out at Starbucks locations without actually having to buy anything. They posted on their website saying:

We are committed to creating a culture of warmth and belonging where everyone is welcome. This policy is intended to help maintain the third place environment in alignment with our mission “to inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.”

Last month Starbucks caused quite a stir when two black men were arrested for trespassing after using a Starbucks bathroom in Philadelphia.  After the incident the company also set a date for sensitivity training for all employees country wide, which will be on May 29th. With this new policy, Starbucks just asks that anyone using their spaces use them as intended, are considerate of others, act responsibly and communicate with respect.
