The St. Paul Park Police Department has issued a warning on Facebook of a new, “sophisticated” scam.

According to reports, scammers have been able to clone the phone number for Excel Energy. This means the actual phone number for Excel Energy will show up as the phone number or be identified by caller ID. The scammers have even been able to “spoof” Excel’s automated message service.

Scammers then threaten disconnect of service if an immediate payment is not made, gathering unsuspecting victim’s personal information, credit card numbers, bank routing numbers, etc.

According to St. Paul Park PD, an Excel Energy representative has confirmed the scam. The public is being cautioned that Excel Energy will never under any circumstances call a customer for a disconnect notice and demand payment.

Finally, PD ask people to spread the word to “family, friends, grandparents, and anyone else who may fall victim.”
