The NBA Finals are here, with the Indiana Pacers currently holding a 2-1 advantage over the Oklahoma City Thunder. Of course, everyone is interested in the game being played on the court, but there is a St. Cloud, MN, connection to the Finals that many might not realize. The voice of the Pacers Radio Network, Mark Boyle, is that connection.

From St. Cloud To The NBA

OK, I don't believe that Mark jumped directly from WJON to the 'Association', but he has been with the Pacers for 37 years, meaning he started in 1988, and from what I've read and heard so far during the Finals, he is having A LOT of fun doing it still.

Boyle's official Pacers biography states that:

"Before coming to Indiana, Boyle spent time in Minneapolis, St. Louis - where he worked in one of the most highly regarded sports departments in broadcasting at KMOX - and New York, where he was one of the original on-air voices at WFAN, the country’s first all-sports radio station. In addition to his NBA experience, which includes work on the nationally broadcast NBA Game of the Week, he has worked in the NHL, spending two seasons with the Minnesota North Stars, and has covered the NFL, Major League Baseball, and Big Ten football and basketball."

Boyle Is Still Enjoying The Ride

I reached out to Mark, and he let me know that he was with WJON for a short period in either 1984 or 1985. After Mark, it was Denny Gordon, followed by John Schroeder coming in 1986.

Mark Boyle is just another great radio pro in a long line of great broadcasters from Minnesota. Enjoy the ride, Mark.

While I've only been in St. Cloud for what will be 3 years on Saturday, knowing the rich history of WJON and those who have walked the hallways before I got here is pretty cool.
