Thanksgiving was on Thursday and now that it's Monday you should have some of these leftovers in the garbage immediately.

We had a great day for Thanksgiving here in central Minnesota. Perfect temperatures, no snow, and sunshine. It was a great weekend for travel too!

Most of us ended up taking home leftovers, and as we now get to over 4 days after Thanksgiving, there's still plenty of leftovers in most of our refrigerators. Here's when you should toss out those Thanksgiving dinner leftovers so you don't end up getting sick.

According to StillTasty.com, here's how to prep the leftovers, and how long to keep them in your fridge:

  • Turkey - 3 to 4 days at most. Use a shallow container and not on the bone.
  • Homemade gravy - 1 to 2 days max. This is the stuff made from the juices of the turkey, not the processed jarred gravy. It goes bad very quickly.
  • Stuffing - 3 to 4 days, so toss it with your turkey leftovers.
  • Mashed potatoes/Green bean casserole - 3 to 5 days. It doesn't even taste good after 4 days!
  • Pumpkin pie - 3 to 4 days. The pumpkin starts to break down and it gets very soggy. Apple pie will last longer and you can leave it out for a couple days before putting it in the fridge.
  • Cranberry sauce - up to 2 weeks!

Some other helpful facts to keep you from getting food poisoning from Thanksgiving leftovers are: You don't have to let the food cool down to room temp before refrigerating it. If you know you won't finish your leftovers before 3 to 4 days, split it up and freeze a lot of it. They will stay good for a very long time and you can enjoy them months from now.
