The Living Dead: How to Grow and Care For a Corpse Flower

As of this writing (5/17/24, 9:35am), Horace the Corpse Flower at the Como Zoo and Conservatory has yet to bloom. That stinks. Not as stinky as when Horace does finally bloom, but it still stinks.

The Como Zoo and adoring smell-deprived fans have been waiting for Horace to bloom for seven years. SEVEN YEARS! The expected blooming is expected to happen this Sunday (5/17), likely in the afternoon or evening. Might as well just get your own corpse flower so you can watch it from the comfort of your own airtight chamber.

I'm not sure if you really want to, but if you do want to just grow your own corpse flower, here's how.

The Birth of the Corpse Flower

You've gotsta get seeds (buying a full-grown plant is spendy). You can buy a ten-pack of seeds on Amazon for $15.99.

Since they're native of the Sumatran jungle (now I want coffee), you need to maintain humidity of 70-90%.

Temperature needs to stay between 75-90 degrees fahrenheit. DO NOT let the temp get below 60F.

Make sure you have plenty of room for this fella; they can grow to 10 feet tall or more.

Keep the clothespins handy when it blooms.
