There’s an old saying that says “you know how to tell a politician is lying, their lips are moving”. And sadly, these days, there is some truth to that statement.

I’m not a historian, but I was awake in high school history class enough to know that what we’ve evolved into politically, is not what it was intended to be.

I have a friend who says he thinks politics is like “professional wrestling”. The politicians get dressed in the same locker room and rehearse what each other will say and do to keep the storyline going. I’m beginning to wonder if he isn’t right?

Having trust in our elected officials and those seeking office seems to be at an all-time low. And not just here in the U.S., but around the world. But one country, Wales, is stepping up to try and pass groundbreaking legislation that could change all that.

According to an article from The Guardian, Welsh officials are being put on notice that lying will not be tolerated anymore. A plan is being sculpted that would remove any elected official from office, or any candidate from seeking office if it is proven that they deliberately lied to the public to their own gain or the gain of their party.

How this will work is just in the beginning stages, but the plan is to have something put together before their next election in 2026.

This was spurred on by a recent argument in parliament where one official accused another of intentionally sending out a tweet that was inaccurate.

I’m also not a legal expert, but I’ve watched enough Law & Order to know that establishing intent can be difficult. In theory this sounds like an awesome thing, if the Welsh folks can figure out a way to make it work.

There’s one part of me that says this would just be another way for our elected officials to waste taxpayer time and money and would serve as another distraction from the real topics by holding more pointless hearings.

But if the Welsh figure this out, this may be the greatest fear of politicians in Washington in a long time.

There’s no doubt this is going to be a long shot but isn’t it fun to imagine how things could be different if it did come to pass.
