Bde Maka Ska in Minneapolis is Lake Calhoun Again
And just like that we are right back to where we started.
Back in January of 2018, former Minnesota DNR commissioner Tom Landwehr approved changing the name of the Minneapolis lake from Lake Calhoun to Bde Maka Ska. Both names have been displayed on signs around the area since 2015, but last year all signs switched to the new name. And now they will have to be changed back.
Kare 11 reported that a three-judge panel reversed the ruling on Monday stating that the commissioner of natural resources didn't have the authority to change the name of Lake Calhoun last year.
Lake Calhoun was originally named back in the 1800's for former vice president, senator (and outspoken slavery supporter) John Calhoun. You can see the issue with that. Bde Maka Ska is the Dakota name for the lake and is American Indian for "White Earth Lake".
Hopefully they didn't get rid of the double name signs last year. Might as well put them back up!
