If you enjoy music, you’ve likely at least heard of Jelly Roll. The rapper turned country singer that is breaking down barriers in the genres of music. His story of being in prison and writing music from his personal experiences really connects with people.

Part of the allure to Jelly Roll’s music is that he openly talks about his struggles and failures but how he’s going to not let those determine who he is in the future.

Hard Fought Hallelujah!

Jelly Roll has gotten the attention of a lot of people for sure. And in the process, we’ve gotten to know other singers and artists because of him.  There is one artist in particular that I have become a fan of because he invited Jelly Roll to sing on a song he wrote.

That artist is Brandon Lake.

Brandon Lake has become one of the hottest Christian artists in the world. He and Jelly Roll re-released Lake’s song “Hard Fought Hallelujah” which talks about somedays it’s hard to Praise GOD or even acknowledge he is with you.

That song got my attention because as I try to strengthen my faith, I feel I am that song most days. After my wife introduced that song to me, I began to dig deeper into Brandon Lake and quickly became a fan.

How Brandon Lake connects to fans through his music?

I like the musical arrangement of his music, but the lyrics are what has won me over the most. For instance:

In his song “Tear Off The Roof”, Lake captures two stories from the bible that resonate. The first is when a paralyzed man is lowered through the roof of a home for healing from Jesus.

The second verse talks about the woman who has suffered from bleeding for 12 years, and how she knows if she just touches the hem of the garment Jesus is wearing, she will be healed. Jesus feels her touch the garment because her faith is so strong.

There are three lines in that song that I keep repeating; “I’ve got a faith without a ceiling” talking about the first of those two stories. The other two come from the story about the woman who has suffered from the bleeding.

I love the line “I’ve got a faith beyond the bleeding, because I didn’t come here to hide in the crowd”. I’ve been pondering that line so much with my own faith journey and what I’ve been called to do, as well as believing in what that calling is even though I can’t see the next turn in the directions.

The other line is “he has more in the hem of his garment than the camp of the enemy”. That one connects with me for so many reasons.

Another song that Lake wrote that I listen to over and over is one called “Gratitude”. There’s a line that says, “come on my soul, don’t you get shy on me, lift up your song ‘cause there’s a lion inside of those lungs”. Strong lyrics for sure.

Brandon Lake coming to Minnesota!

Brandon Lake is coming to St. Paul on Sunday August 26th. Tickets are on sale through ticketmaster.com and there are good seats still available that come with a higher price tag. But there are also plenty of seats that fall into the lower tear of prices that are available too.

If you’re looking for help in your daily faith walk, I know what Brandon Lake’s songs have meant to me, maybe they could impact you too.
