Central Minnesota Gears Up For ‘Veterans Day Parade’ & Ceremony
VETERANS TO BE HONORED WITH A PARADE
Monday, November 11th is Veterans Day and we want to honor our Veterans in central Minnesota with a parade.
WHAT IS VETERANS DAY ALL ABOUT?
Lots of people get Veterans Day and Memorial Day confused. What's the difference, you say? Memorial Day is remembering those people who made the ultimate sacrifice. Veterans Day is when we honor ALL of the brave men and women in the United States military, who have served and protected us day and night.
ARMISTICE DAY
Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day and was renamed Veterans Day by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1954 and is now dedicated to veterans of all wars, not just World War I.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF NOVEMBER 11TH
I discovered that Veterans Day hasn't always been celebrated on November 11th. According to AARP.org, congress passed the Uniform Holiday Bill in 1968, which ensured that federal employees would get three-day weekends by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays, but many states disapproved of that decision; so in 1975, President Gerald Ford returned Veterans Day back to November 11th, when the war ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. (Originally called Armistice Day).
PARADE
The New York City Veterans Day Parade is the largest and oldest Veterans Day parade in the US, first held back in 1919.
ST CLOUD PARADE
We will honor our local Veterans with our own parade on Monday, November 11th, at 11 am in downtown St. Cloud. The parade will begin at the St. Cloud Library and head east to River's Edge.
VETERANS DAY CEREMONY
After the parade, you are welcome to come to the Veterans Day Ceremony being held at 1:30 pm at the St. Cloud VA Medical Center Auditorium, in Building 8.
