We are now less than year away from everyone who travels needing a Real ID. Homeland Security will require these ID’s starting May 7, 2025, for anyone who plans to get on a domestic flight.

All fifty states, the District of Columbia and the five territories are already issuing Real ID drivers licenses and IDs. So, you can go ahead and start the process of getting yours now.

As it is likely that as we get closer to that deadline, people who have waited until the last minute to get theirs will be flocking to get that done.

The requirement for a Real ID dates back to 2005 when congress passed the bill following a 9/11 Commission report saying the Federal Government should set a standard in the issuance of identifications as such as drivers licenses.

To be able to get your Real ID, you’ll need five pieces of documentation;

  • A document showing your Full Legal Name
  • Your date of birth
  • Social Security Number
  • Two Proofs of Address of Principal Residence
  • Proof of Lawful Status

If you can’t find a social security card, you can use a W-2, A Pay Stub with your name and social security number on it, An SSA-1099 Form, or a Non-SSA 1099 Form.

A Real ID will have a symbol on it that shows your identification meets the requirements to board a plane. You will not be allowed to board without the Real ID effective May 7th of next year.
