Hunting season with firearms is just about upon us, and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety took the opportunity over the weekend to remind gun owners about safety with their weapons and about getting a free gun lock for your gun.

The Department of Public Safety says since 2022, they’ve given away 95,000-gun locks to help ensure that there are no accidents with children inside homes around the state. The locks are easy to install as the video the DPS has made available.

If you own a firearm and do not have a gun lock yet, here is a link to where you can find partners who can assist you in getting a lock.

Gun locks offer peace of mind if you have children in the house. If they were to find the weapon, a tragic accident would not occur. But the gun locks are also good in case someone is in the home with knowledge of where the gun is feeling depressed. A readily available weapon increases the risk of suicide.

Another important aspect of Gun Locks is that they reduce the gun being stolen in case of a theft at the home the gun is in.

Gun owners are still encouraged to have safe and proper storage for their weapons on top of having gun locks on them. Last year in the United States there were over 460 accidental gun deaths.
